What to Expect: Your SightScore™ Testing Journey from Saliva to Results

If you’re considering genetic testing for glaucoma, you might be wondering what’s involved. The good news? Getting your SightScore™ test is straightforward, painless, and can be done at home. Here’s what to expect from start to finish.

Step-by-step photo guide of saliva collection process

Step 1: Getting referred

If you have glaucoma or signs that are suspicious of glaucoma (a “glaucoma suspect”), then your eye care provider uses the secure Seonix Clinician Portal to refer you for testing. You’ll receive a SightScore™ kit containing everything you need. You can collect your sample at the clinic with assistance or take the kit home.

If you have no signs of glaucoma then you can get referred through our SightScore Family Service (www.seonixbio.com/family/).  We will ship you a SightScore™ kit with everything you need to collect your sample at home.

Step 2: Register Your Kit Online

Before collecting your sample, register your kit at portal.seonixbio.com/register. This takes a couple of minutes and includes entering your Referral ID, providing contact details, completing consent, and making payment.

Important: Kits must be registered before collection or they cannot be processed by our laboratory.

Step 3: Collect Your Saliva Sample

The collection is simple and painless – no needles required! Before starting, don’t eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum for 30 minutes.

The process:

  1. Open the package and place the sponge far back in your mouth
  2. Gently rub along the lower gums 10 times on each side
  3. Carefully unscrew the blue cap without touching the sponge
  4. Insert the sponge into the tube and close the cap tightly
  5. Shake vigorously 15 times to mix
  6. Label the tube with your name, date of birth, and collection date

The entire collection takes less than 5 minutes. Unlabelled tubes will not be processed, so don’t forget this crucial step.

Step 4: Package and Post Your Sample

Place your tube in the clear biohazard bag, then into the Reply Paid envelope. Drop it in any Australia Post mailbox – no stamp needed! Your sample is stable during regular mail transit.

Step 5: Laboratory Analysis

At our laboratory, your DNA is extracted and analysed. Our advanced equipment examines millions of genetic variants to calculate your personalised polygenic risk score. Quality control checks ensure accurate results.

Step 6: Results Ready (4-6 Weeks)

Your report is typically ready within 4-6 weeks, though it may occasionally take up to 8 weeks. If you were referred by your eye care provider, they will be notified and can download your comprehensive report through the secure portal. If you purchased the test via our SightScore Family service, then a password protected copy of the report will be emailed to you.

Your report includes:

  • Your polygenic risk score and population comparison
  • What your score means for your eye health
  • Screening and monitoring recommendations
  • Visual representations and clear explanations

Step 7: Discussing Your Results

The most important step is meeting with your eye care provider to discuss your results. They’ll explain your risk level, recommend appropriate screening frequency, and answer your questions. Your genetic risk score is one valuable piece of information that helps create a complete picture of your eye health.
